Modern Piano / Keyboard

Ages 5 and up

This is our most popular and longest lasting course here at the school. Learn to play pop, jazz, rock, or blues through innovative and exciting teaching methods. From very early on students are taught to analyze and understand the music they play, not just play it. We offer a highly motivational teaching style, access to thousands of progressive music books and sheet music, and occasional use of a recording studio. All this keeps students encouraged as they learn to read music, arrange music, perform from chord charts and even play completely by ear.

Classical Piano

Ages 5 and up

Learn to play Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Mozart and others through the traditional and respected methods established by the Royal Conservatory of Music. Teachers for this course are registered RCM teachers. They have proven track records of achieving high results for their students through exceptional examination scores and by offering their students a deeper and more musical understanding of all classical music. Students taking this course have the option of taking formal RCM examinations or surveying each grade under the guidance of their teacher.

Please note that many students choose to combine these two teaching methods (Modern Piano and Classical Piano). Though your teacher may suggest this option to you, please feel free to discuss this unique and diverse learning opportunity with us in advance or at any time throughout the lessons.

An exciting option offered to all Classical Piano students is the option to learn to play on our world-class 7-foot concert grand piano.

Modern Electric / Acoustic guitar

Ages 6 and up

One of our most popular classes, this course is perfect for students who want to learn to play along with their favourite songs or as part of a band. The guitar is a versatile and creative instrument and this course is designed with that in mind. Guitar students can learn to read music, read from TAB, or play by ear. Plenty of fun extras such as play-along CDs and drum samples make for a more complete learning experience. Our guitar teachers are professionals who bring their own intense musical training, passion, and years of performing and studio experience to every lesson. To play like a pro, you need to learn from a pro; it’s as simple as that!

Please note that one of our guitar teachers is also a certified and exceptional teacher of Classical Guitar. Please inquire if you feel this beautiful and demanding style of playing would best suit you or your child to ensure proper placement.

Bass Guitar

Ages 8 and up

Arguably one of the most critical instruments in a band is the bass guitar – the foundation of modern music. Bass lessons include the teaching of difficult bass technique, finger picking styles, chord chart reading, analysis, and the development of tone. Lessons are progressive and combine the academic theory of bass with the most modern styles and influences.

Drums

Ages 6 and up

Drums are cool. Drummers are cooler! Drum lessons are physical, addictive, and exciting and often create huge passion in young students trying them for the first time. No you do NOT need a full drum kit at home in order to take lessons, just a pair of sticks and a practice pad (both of which we can provide) to get started. At Alderwood drum lessons, like all lessons, combine short term exciting musical goals with long term technical and theoretical training from professional instructors with musical degrees and experience. Every band needs a great drummer. Expose yourself or your child to power and precision of the drums and know you are making a choice likely to spark a real love of music! (Drums also make an excellent second instrument for enthusiastic students who wish to enhance their study of another instrument!)

Voice

Ages 6 and up

One of the most important and commonly overlooked music lessons are voice lessons. Singers have the unique challenge of being both the performer and the instrument and as such have the added responsibility of taking proper care of their voices. Voice students can learn classical, pop, jazz, music theatre, or a combination of styles. Lessons emphasize vocal range, expression, proper breathing and warm-ups, as well as microphone and performance techniques. Voice lessons are taught in a spacious and private environment with a professional grand piano, mirrors, and microphone when needed or in a modern, soundproof studio with digital piano and recording equipment.

Steps to Music

Ages 3.5 – 7

Perhaps our most unique course here at Alderwood is our Steps to Music course which offers PRIVATE one on one classes specifically designed for young children. Building upon well over a decade in the field of professional music education, we have come up with a course outline that is incredibly engaging and exciting for young minds, igniting that important spark in music. This affordable course includes access to other instruments such as hand drums, ukulele, and singing. The focus is placed on fun, interactive games that stimulate young children. The instructors of this course have been carefully selected as not only professional musicians, but also gifted instructors who poses the patience and warmth needed to work at this critical age. Speed of progress is not the focus here, instead we work hard to customize lessons around YOUR child within the framework of our curriculum. Parents are welcome but not required to join in the classes. In many cases this is the first opportunity for a child to work one on one with an instructor who will focus on just them, and this alone can make this program invaluable! Come try it out for yourself and see what individualized, motivational learning can do for your young budding musician!

Ukulele

Ages 4.5 and up

We are excited to offer Ukulele lessons at Alderwood and encourage anyone wanting a gentle start into music lessons to try out this highly addictive instrument. Taking private music lessons can be a bit daunting, especially for younger children. Knowing this we offer private lessons on an instrument that can be learned relatively quickly, the Ukulele! Lessons on the Ukulele are taught by instructors who also love to sing and will encourage sing-along opportunities. The ukulele is also an excellent warm-up instrument for eventual guitar or bass lessons as it is much easier on the fingers, faster to learn, and cheaper for parents to buy! Four strings and endless possibilities…join us!

Songwriting

Ages 9 and up

If you have ever wanted to take one on one classes to learn how to write music or improve your existing compositions from professional musicians who live in the world of music, you have come to the right place. Our songwriting classes are highly popular and, like all our classes, are tailored around your style, needs, and speed of learning. If you are looking for inspiration we can help, even if you have never tried to write a song don’t be shy and give this class a try! A song is immortal.

Violin

Ages 4 and up

One of the greatest instruments for young learners is the violin. The reason is the violin is an un-fretted instrument which forces the student to find pitches using their ear instead of just hitting a pre-determined note with their finger. This ear training is incredibly valuable to young budding musicians and has been proven to stay with them for the rest of their lives, leading to a more full and rewarding life of musical enjoyment and performance. Our violin lessons follow the same core philosophies that our other instruments share; namely the importance of customized private lessons focused on fun and motivation and taught by music professionals who live the life they teach.
